Planning Commission meets April 28. Here’s how to weigh in.
The City and Borough of Juneau Planning Commission Meeting will occur April 28 at 7 p.m. This meeting will be telephonic only. The commission will review a city project to deckover a portion of the downtown waterfront, a permit for a new wireless communication tower, a permit and city project review for a Valley Transit Center with associated park & ride facilities, a permit to continue operation of the CBJ South Lemon Creek sand and gavel facility with asphalt reclamation and rock crushing, and a permit for a temporary asphalt plant at the Juneau International Airport. These items are up for public hearing.
Adhering to the State of Alaska mandate on gatherings, the Assembly Chambers will be closed to the public. Members of the public wishing to testify or listen in can call 907-713-2140 up to 10 minutes prior to the start of the Planning Commission Meeting. When prompted, enter the Participant ID – 813893 – and state your name. Callers will be asked which agenda item they wish to testify on and will be notified when it is their turn to speak. At the start of testimony, the caller will be asked to state their name, place of residence, and will be asked to stay on the phone after their testimony to answer any questions from the Commission. Deckover a portion of the downtown waterfront between the Steamship Dock and Marine Park, where the lightering float was previously located (CSP2020 0003)
This project will provide a continuous pedestrian path from the seawalk, through Marine Park and up Seward Street. This path will facilitate access from the waterfront to the Soboleff Center and to the proposed Culture Center at Sealaska Plaza. The project will deck over the existing gap in the seawalk, pour concrete and plant grass consistent with that to the east, demolish and reconstruct part of the existing seawalk to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act grade requirements, and provide gated access to the dolphin mooring structure.
A Wireless Communication Facility Permit for a new, unlit, 98-foot wireless communication tower (WCF2020 0001)
The applicant requests a Special Use Permit (SUP) for the development of a Wireless Communication Facility located at 12401 Glacier Highway. If approved, this SUP would allow for the construction of a 98-foot, unlit, wireless communication tower. The proposed wireless communication tower will be 90 feet in height with an additional 8 feet of antenna and lightning rod equipment, for an overall height of 98 feet.
A Conditional Use Permit & City Project Review to build a Valley Transit Center with associated Park & Ride facilities (USE2019 0015)
The applicant requests a Conditional Use Permit for the development of a public transit center and associated park and ride facility for Capital Transit. The permit would allow the development of a transit center with driver break facilities and possibly a public bathroom, along with the associated Park and Ride on a future lot within the current Mendenhall Mall lot in a Light Commercial zoning district.
A Conditional Use Permit to continue operation of the City and Borough of Juneau South Lemon Creek Material Source sand and gravel facility, and asphalt reclamation/rock crushing (USE2020 0003)
The applicant, the City and Borough of Juneau Lands and Resources, requests a Conditional Use Permit to continue the existing sand and gravel extraction, asphalt crushing and reclamation, and stockpiling operation at the Lemon Creek Gravel Pit, also known as the South Lemon Creek Material Source. The facility is operated by the CBJ Engineering and Public Works Department.
A Conditional Use Permit for a temporary asphalt plant at the Juneau International Airport (USE2020 0005)
The applicant requests a Conditional Use Permit for the development of a temporary asphalt plant at the Juneau International Airport (JIA). According to the applicant’s narrative, the asphalt plant would support further phases of the JIA taxiway rehabilitation, relocation, and realignment projects through October 2021.
