Juneau Hotel Business is Booming

FEBRUARY 22, 1896-The U. S. Revenue Cutter Walcott, at anchor in the harbor, this morning fired a 21 gun salute in honor of the birthday of the Father of Our Country.

The new Circle City Hotel opened its doors today. George Miller and Lockie MacKinnon, oldtimers of both this camp and of the Interior, are proprietors.

FEBRUARY 26, 1896-A snowslide that swept down Snowslide Gulch last week swept away Harry Hill?s sluice boxes which stood on the bank of the Gold Creek and carried them far up the hill on the other side.

A flood of travelers is going through to Dyea, bound for the Yukon.

FEBRUARY 29, 1896-The Juneau is the name of a resort opened by Oliver Farnum in the building on Front Street formerly occupied by W. P. Ellingen?s cigar factory.

The large Hall safe used by the Bank of Juneau has been purchased by B. M. Behrends.

MARCH 7, 1896-A ?Hard Times Dance? will be given at Kane?s Hall in Douglas on Saint Patrick?s Day.

E. H. Sherman has drawn the plans for a new hotel building for S. O. Wheelock at Front and Main streets. The building will measure 36 by 60 feet and will have 22 rooms on the two top floors with two stories and a lobby on the ground floor. Wheelock says he will name it the Franklin Hotel to carry on the name of the original Franklin, of which he was once an owner.

The hotel business is booming in Juneau. Olds and Orton are putting a 12-room addition on their Occidental Hotel.

MARCH 11, 1896-The Republican Territorial Committee met Thursday evening in the law offices of Judge Bugbee and set May 14th as the date for a territorial convention to choose delegates to the Republican National Convention which will assemble in St. Louis on June 16.

A recent snowslide in Silver Bow Basin carried away the air compressor and its building belonging to the Juneau Mining Company. The slide passed near the old Campbell five stamp mill but did not strike it.

Great schools of herring have appeared in the bay.

The Mint Saloon was burglarized early Friday morning and a small amount of cash and some cigars were taken.
