Summary:

2022 is coming to a close, and the Juneau Police Department would like to remind everyone to have a safe and happy New Year.

The Juneau Police Department will have additional staff on duty to handle calls for service and DWI enforcement over New Year's Eve. If you choose to drink, do so responsibly and please don't drink and drive. Juneau Crime Line is offering DWI rewards during this time. If you see a drunk driver, call JPD to report it. If an arrest is made, your name can be put in to receive a DWI reward.

If you plan to set off fireworks, please review the City and Borough's ordinance on fireworks.

Concussive Fireworks - Mines and shells (mortars) and tubes larger than 3/4" - They are allowed when all three conditions are met; on private property or on designated public property, located outside the Fire Service Area, and only on New Year's and Fourth of July as defined below.

Holiday Fireworks - Roman candles, skyrockets with sticks, helicopter rockets, and firecrackers with soft casings. Allowed on private property or on designated public property.

Allowable Fireworks - Cylindrical fountains, cone fountains, wheels, illuminating torches, dipped sticks, novelties. Allowed on private property or on designated public property.

Allowable Times of Use for Fireworks Over New Year's:

  • December 31: 10:00 a.m.—Midnight (14 hours)
  • January 1: Midnight—1:00 a.m. (one hour)
  • January 1: 10:00 a.m.—11:59 p.m. (14 hours)

The Fire Service Area extends from the end of Thane Road to Cohen Drive; out to the North Douglas boat launch and up to the houses on Fish Creek Road; out to the end of Sandy Beach on Douglas; all of the Lemon Creek; and all of the Mendenhall Valley. A person who violates the fireworks ordinance may be subject to a $250 fine.

The Juneau Police Department would like to wish everyone a happy New Year.
