*** Updated 09/21/20 ***

The deceased has been identified as 60-year-old Juneau resident, Stephen Wayne Todd. The notification to next of kin has been so far unsuccessful due to lack of information. The cause of death is still being determined and JPD is waiting on the results from the autopsy conducted at the medical examiners office.

*******************************

On 09/03/20, at about 6:56 PM, the Juneau Police Department received a report of a body that washed up on the beach in the 3700 block of North Douglas Highway. A resident in the area had been walking near the beach when they made the discovery and called JPD.

JPD responded to the area to investigate. The deceased was identified as a 60-year-old male Juneau resident. Identification of the deceased was made by his Alaska ID card, which was still in his possession; other personal property items were also located in the male's clothing. The body of the deceased appeared to have been in the water for the past several hours, but not for an extensive amount of time. The body of the male had a laceration across the right cheek, but it is unknown at this time if the injury was sustained before going into the water, or afterwards.

Based on prior police contacts, responding officers were familiar with the deceased and knew that he lived out of a residential vehicle, which was contacted by JPD in the Harris Harbor parking lot back in August. Officers went to the Harris Harbor parking lot and located the same vehicle parked there. The vehicle was seized for evidence and later searched, but there was nothing located that would indicate a cause of death or how the man ended up in the water.

The body of the 60-year-old male will be sent to the Medical Examiners office in Anchorage for an autopsy. This case is still under investigation as the cause of death, or how the man ended up in the water is still unknown. JPD is currently trying to determine next of kin for the death notification.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
