INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Motor Vehicle Crash in Construction Area
Date: 2019-09-23
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #190923-007
Summary:

On 09/23/2019, at 12:28 PM, the Juneau Police Department received multiple 911 calls regarding a man who had been crushed, and was trapped by an I-beam at the construction site adjacent to the Marine Parking Garage. Callers reported that a vehicle had driven through the parking garage barrier and struck an the I-beam, causing it to land on a worker.

Construction crew members were able to use a nearby crane to lift the I-beam off of the trapped worker.

CCFR transported the worker to the Bartlett Regional Hospital for a medical evaluation. The worker has been identified as a 50-year old male Juneau resident. The worker sustained serious injuries to both his lower legs, but the injuries are not considered life threatening at this time.

JPD investigated the cause of the crash and determined that a black 2008 Ford Explorer, driven by a 76-year old male Juneau resident, was attempting to park in a parking space in the bottom floor of the parking garage. The driver was parking when his foot slipped from the brake pedal, to the gas pedal, accelerating the vehicle forward. The vehicle drove over the parking curb and through the parking garage barrier. The construction worker was welding on the I-beam that was laying down, directly in front of where the vehicle broke through the barrier. The force of the impact knocked the I-beam over, and onto the workers lower legs.

The investigation showed no signs of impairment against the driver of the Explorer. This case is still under investigation.

Photos from the crash have been posted on the JPD Facebook page.
