On 07/31/2019, at approximately 4:18 AM, the Juneau Police Department received a report of an attempted robbery of The Grind coffee shop located on Jensine Street.
The investigation revealed 38 year old Juneau resident Charles R. Clasby, parked behind The Grind and approached the on-duty barista on foot. The barista was identified as a 24 year old female Juneau resident. Clasby told the barista that he was going to rob the coffee shop. Clasby then returned to his car, covered his face, armed himself with a wrench, and began walking back to the barista. The barista fired one shot into the air from a pistol. Clasby returned to his vehicle and began ramming the coffee stand with his car, causing approximately $3,000 in damage to the building.
At the time of the incident, there were three other customers at The Grind in two vehicles. The barista entered one of the customer vehicles and fled from the area. Clasby followed the barista inbound on Egan Drive.
JPD officers conducted a traffic stop on Clasby and he was taken into custody. Clasby was arrested for Robbery in the 1st Degree, two counts of Assault in the 3rd Degree, two counts of Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree, and Violating Conditions of Release original charge Harassment. Clasby was transported to and lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center and held on No Bail.
No one was injured during the incident. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this case.
