INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Investigation into Possible Arson
Date: 2019-04-22
From: Erann Kalwara - JPD PIO
Case or Incident: #
Summary:

On April 22nd, 2019 at about 09:11am, multiple 9-1-1 calls were received reporting an explosion and fire with large flames coming from the side of a commercial building at 1248 Glacier Avenue. Capital City Fire/Rescue and Juneau Police Department Officers were dispatched to the scene.

Prior to responder’s arrival, citizens attempted to extinguish the fire with a hose and extinguishers. The roadway in the immediate area was closed to through traffic due to the incident. CCF/R put the fire out and searched the building.  Once it was determined that everyone was safe and there was not a risk of the fire rekindling, the CCF/R Deputy Fire Marshall began an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire.

The Fire Marshall advised JPD officers that an initial assessment indicates that the fire was likely caused by an explosion in the storage shed where the fire originated. It is possible that that the fire was set intentionally. JPD and CCF/R are initiating an arson investigation.

If anyone has information regarding the fire please call JPD at 907-586-0600 or submit an anonymous tip at JuneauCrimeLine.com
