A man came to the JPD lobby this afternoon and reported that he had just received a call from a specific JPD Lieutenant asking him for his credit card information. The man was directed to go to JPD to meet with the Lieutenant. When he came to JPD, it was determined that the Lieutenant had not placed the call. Fortunately, the man did not give out his credit card information.
This was an attempt to fraudulently gain access to financial information. Scammers sometimes represent themselves as JPD employees. The scammers may even “spoof” the phone number displaying on caller ID to make it appear to be the JPD main phone number.
JPD will never contact someone and demand credit card, prepaid cash or banking information. Reputable organization do not conduct business this way. If you receive such a call, do not provide any financial or personal information and promptly disconnect from the call. If in doubt, call JPD or the organization being represented at their published number.
