INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Warrant Arrest/Assault on a Police Officer
Date: 2019-04-01
From: Erann Kalwara - JPD PIO
Case or Incident: #190401-008
Summary:

At around 11:38 this morning, two JPD officers contacted 53 year old Juneau resident Nathan D. Hayes on a boat docked at Statter Harbor. During the contact, officers determined that Hayes had an outstanding JPD arrest warrant. When Hayes was advised that he would be arrested, he resisted. This created significant safety concerns on the vessel.

Hayes did not comply with the officer’s repeated verbal commands. During the struggle to take Hayes into custody, a Taser, OC “pepper” spray and baton strikes were deployed.  These force alternatives were not impactful on Hayes and officers fought to get him under control. Hayes continued to struggle against the officers until they were finally able to gain enough control to detain him into handcuffs. During the struggle, one officer sustained a minor injury to his arm.

Hayes was arrested on the misdemeanor warrant dated August 1, 2018 charging DV Assault. He was additionally charged with Resisting Arrest and Assault on a Police Officer. He was transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital (BRH) for assessment. Once cleared at BRH, he was transported to the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
