INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Crisis Situation on the Juneau Douglas Bridge
Date: 2018-12-17
From: Sgt. Shawn Phelps
Case or Incident: #181216-007
Summary:

On 12/16/2018, at about 7PM, a Juneau Police Department officer was driving over the Juneau Douglas Bridge and noticed a car stopped on the bridge.  A concerned citizen was walking to the edge of the bridge where the officer noticed a young woman holding on from the outside of the railing.  The woman was in crisis.  Moments before the woman jumped, the officer grabbed her and held on.  More officers quickly arrived along with CCFR and the Coast Guard.  JPD and CCFR staff were able to pull the woman safely onto the bridge.  The female was transported for evaluation.

Traffic flow was restored over the bridge after emergency vehicles were able to clear.

While the holiday season brings great joy to many, it is a difficult time for others.  The Juneau Police Department would like to remind you to be gracious to others and look for opportunities to carry other's burdens.

Pain shared is pain divided.  Joy shared is joy multiplied.
