Pedestrian struck and killed by motor vehicle on Egan Drive.

On 12/08/18, at about 4:25 PM, the Juneau Police Department received a report of pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle in the area of Egan Drive and 12th Street. JPD and CCFR responded to the area to assist. The pedestrian, 74 year old Juneau resident, Michael Mason Sheehan, sustained life threatening injuries during the collision and was immediately transported to the hospital by CCFR. At the hospital, Sheehan was pronounced deceased. Sheehan had also been walking with this dog at the time of the collision. The dog was found deceased upon the arrival of first responders. Officers blocked off the roadway and started investigating the cause of the crash.

Officers determined that Sheehan had been crossing Egan drive from the area of 12th Street, towards Harris Harbor, when he was struck by a  a green 2016 Subaru Forrester that was travelling inbound on Egan Drive, in the right hand lane. The driver of the vehicle is a 63 year old Juneau resident. The driver of the vehicle showed no signs of impairment, and there is no crosswalk in the area where the crash took place.

Egan Drive was closed for a couple hours while officers investigated the crash. During the time officers had the road closed, two unrelated arrests were made at the scene. 64 year old Allen Edward Klein drove his 2004 Toyota through a police barricade and was found to be intoxicated. Klein was arrested for DWI and blew a .191% on a breath test. 58 year old Jeffrey Dale Carpenter pulled a knife on an Alaska State Trooper who was assisting JPD with keeping a barrier around the crash site. Carpenter had wanted to cross Egan Drive in the middle of the crash site and was told no, and to walk around. Carpenter became upset for the inconvenience, and pulled the knife on the trooper. Carpenter went to jail for assault in the 3rd degree. Nobody was injured during that incident.

The investigation of the motor vehicle collision is under investigation.
