INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Bank Robbery at Downtown Wells Fargo
Date: 2018-12-07
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #181206-007
Summary:

Bank Robbery at the Downtown Wells Fargo. Suspect in custody.

*****Update 12/7/18*****

The suspect in the robbery has been identified as 54 year old Juneau resident, David Glenn Waits.

Wells Fargo employees told responding officers that Waits presented a note demanding $50 and $100 bills. Waits appeared intoxicated and at first they were confused by his demand. Waits repeatedly demanded the money and become more aggressive in his demands. This prompted the employees to become scared that Waits could harm them and they gave him one $100 bill. Waits took the money and left the bank.

Officers located Waits at the downtown transit center and detained him. Waits was brought back to JPD and a search warrant was served on him. The $100 bill was not found in Waits' possessions.

Waits was taken to the jail and lodged on one count of coercion, a class C felony.

A photo of David Waits has been posted on the JPD Facebook Page.

On 12/06/18, at about 2:40 PM, the Juneau Police Department received a call from Wells Fargo, reporting there had just been a robbery at the bank, located at 123 Seward Street.

Officers responded to the bank and met with employees. Officers learned that a man had come into the bank and passed a note to a teller, demanding money. When the teller didn't immediately hand over the money, the male became more aggressive in his demands. The man never directly threatened anyone at the bank, and there were no reports that the man was armed with a weapon. The teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of money and the man left the bank.

Officers obtained the note and a description of the suspect. The suspect was described as a 5' male, with a medium build, shaggy ear length hair, wearing a black coat with a blue fleece jacket. Soon afterwards, the JPD Downtown Officer located a man matching the description of the suspect inside the downtown transit center. The man was taken into custody and taken to JPD for further questioning.

This case is still under active investigation and will be updated on 12/07/2018.
