Subject: Death Investigation **UPDATE**
Date: 2018-09-27
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #180925-010
Summary:

The deceased male found in the "Glory Hole" is identified as 56 year old Steven Earl Carey. Next of kin has been notified. Family members told police that Mr. Carey had recently been living in Washington State and came to Juneau unexpectedly.

********UPDATE********

On 09/25/18, at about 3:45 PM, the Juneau Police Department received a report that a hiker had found a male body floating in the area of the old Treadmill gold mine, commonly referred to as, "The Glory Hole".

JPD and CCFR responded to the area and confirmed there was a body floating at the bottom of the Glory Hole. Due to the steep terrain, CCFR Special Teams were called in to assist.

Over the next several hours, CCFR Special Teams worked to remove the body from the Glory Hole.

A Washington State driver’s license was located in a wallet inside the man’s clothing. From the driver’s license, the man was identified as a 56 year old Washington resident. Alaska records show that the male may have lived in Juneau between the 1970's and 1980's.

JPD is currently working with law enforcement agencies in Washington to locate the man's next of kin.

Investigating officers saw no signs of injury or trauma to the body that would indicate a cause of death. The investigation is still on-going and the body will be sent to the Medical Examiner's office in Anchorage for an autopsy.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
