INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Motor Vehicle Crash With Injuries
Date: 2018-09-13
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #180912-006
Summary:

On 09/12/18, at about 5:07 PM, the Juneau Police Department received multiple reports of a motor vehicle crash in the area of the Auke Bay roundabout. It was reported that three vehicles were involved in the crash and three pedestrians had also been injured. A CBJ Harbors employee was on scene assisting when JPD and CCF/R responded to the area.

The investigation showed that a red 2016 Jeep Wrangler had been driving inbound on Glacier Highway, through the Auke Bay roundabout, when it stopped for pedestrians crossing the roadway to the water side of Glacier Highway. About that same time, a green 2003 Subaru Forester, being driven by an 89 year old female, was also driving inbound on Glacier Highway, approaching the roundabout. The green Subaru did not stop behind the Jeep and drove up over the sidewalk on the water side, striking two pedestrians; a 48 year old male and a 38 year old female. The green Subaru continued driving inbound through the roundabout and collided head on with a silver 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. The silver Subaru was driven by a 19 year old male, who was stopped in the outbound lanes of Glacier Highway when struck. The force of that collision pushed the silver Subaru back, striking a 52 year old male who was walking on Glacier Highway. After striking the silver Subaru, the green Subaru spun out of control and struck a bronze 2014 Toyota pickup, driven by a 45 year old male that was waiting to pull out of Auke Bay Harbor Road.

The green Subaru Forester sustained approximately $10,000 in damage and was towed from the scene. The silver Subaru sustained approximately $8,000 in damage and was towed from the scene. The bronze Toyota truck sustained approximately $2,000 in damage and was able to be driven from the scene. The red Jeep was not damaged in the incident.

The drivers of the green Subaru, the silver Subaru and all three pedestrians sustained injuries during the crash and were transported to the hospital for medical evaluation. Some of the injuries are serious, but are not considered life threatening at this time. The drivers of the bronze Toyota and the red Jeep were uninjured.

Glacier Highway at the Auke Bay roundabout was closed for about 1 1/2 hours while CCF/R provided medical services and JPD investigated the crash.

A citation has not been issued and the investigation is ongoing.
