INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: $200,000 in Drugs Seized
Date: 2018-08-15
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #N/A
Summary:

On Friday, August 10th, 2018, the Juneau Police Department assisted U.S. Postal Inspectors, Alaska State Troopers and other Federal Agencies with the seizure of nearly three pounds of methamphetamine, over five ounces of heroin and an ounce of cocaine. The drugs had an estimated street value of about $200,000.

The drugs had been mailed in a package going to a residence in Juneau. U.S. Postal Inspectors identified the package as suspicious and requested assistance from JPD. JPD Canine Officer Buddy sniffed the packaged and alerted on the presence of narcotics.

The vast majority of the drugs were removed from the package and then delivered to the intended recipient, 28 year old Juneau resident Chantel Epstein, located at an apartment in the 1000 block of Salmon Creek Lane.

Authorities continued to track the package as it was brought downtown to a hotel room in the 100 block of North Franklin Street. Law enforcement agents entered the room and contacted Epstein and 42 year old California resident Kevin Leonard. Several firearms were also located inside the room.

Epstein and Leonard were both placed under arrest and charged with federal drug conspiracy. Both Epstein and Leonard were transported and lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

This investigation is on-going.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
