INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Animal Attack
Date: 2017-12-26
From: Sergeant Sterling Salisbury
Case or Incident: #171226-005
Summary:

On 12/26/17 at approximately 10:42 am, the Juneau Police Department received a report of two dogs fighting in the 4400 block of Columbia Blvd. The caller reported that they saw a male lying on the ground and a possibly heard a gunshot.

JPD arrived on scene and contacted owners of both dogs. Investigation revealed that a dog sitter was walking a dog on a leash. A second dog came into the street and confronted the dog on the leash. Both dogs began fighting. The dog owner and the dog sitter attempted to break the dogs apart. A third party came out of their residence and saw a dog biting both individuals who were trying to break up the fight. He discharged one single gunshot into the ground to deter the fighting dogs. The gunshot broke up the animals and the homeowner and dog sitter were able to get the dogs under control.

One of the dogs sustained injuries and was driven to the animal hospital for evaluation. One dog owner sustained a possible broken hand, while the other owner sustained minor injuries.

Animal Control is investigating the dog bite, while JPD is investigating the discharge of a firearm.
