On 11/19/2017, at approximately 4:10 PM, the Juneau Police Department was notified of a death that occurred at the Rainforest Recovery Center. Medics from Capital City Fire/Rescue arrived and attempted lifesaving measures on the male without success. The deceased male was identified as 57 year old Juneau resident Steven Jay West.
The investigation revealed that West was picked up by Rainforest Recovery in the downtown area at approximately 1:30 PM. West was intoxicated, but walking and talking. West was medically cleared and admitted to the sleep off center. During a routine check, at approximately 4:05 PM, staff discovered that West was deceased. West was the only client in the sleep-off center during this timeframe.
There were no signs of trauma to West and foul play is not suspected. West was sent to the Medical Examiner?s Office in Anchorage for an autopsy.
Next of kin has been notified.
The investigation is continuing.
