Subject: DWI and Weapons Misconduct

Summary:

On 11/30/2016, at approximately 8:43 PM, the Juneau Police Department was notified by a pedestrian that he had been struck by a station wagon on Foster Avenue in Douglas. The caller reported that the station wagon was occupied by two females, had a burned out taillight and damage from striking him, and left the area by driving down Cordova Street. The pedestrian declined medical assistance.

A JPD officer located the vehicle coming off the Juneau-Douglas Bridge and performed a traffic stop on the vehicle on Egan Drive near the Wharf. As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver and passenger switched positions.

The driver of the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop was identified as 25 year old Juneau resident Sharon Harris. The passenger who moved into the driver seat was identified as 23 year old Juneau resident Sheryl Shorty.

Harris was searched and found to be in possession of a loaded concealed handgun. Harris also displayed signs of alcohol impairment and failed standard field sobriety tests. Harris was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to JPD, where her breath alcohol registered over the legal limit. Harris was transported the Lemon Creek Correctional Center. Harris was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Misconduct Involving a Weapon in the 4th Degree, Misconduct Involving a Weapon in the 5th Degree, and Driving Without a Valid License.

Shorty also displayed signs of alcohol impairment and failed standard field sobriety tests. Short was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to JPD, where her breath alcohol registered over the legal limit. Shorty was transported to the Lemon Creek Correction Center. Shorty was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.

The vehicle was impounded.
