People hiking at Amalga Meadows during a retreat at the Eagle Valley Center

Upon arrival at the Eagle Valley Center you will find a large lawn or snow covered field depending on the season.  Yard games or just sitting and enjoying the view of the scenic meadow are welcome. Picnic tables and a fire pit are available for use. A bridge over the slough will lead you to the Amalga Meadow Trail with activities such as; hiking, berry picking, wildflower and wildlife viewing. This short trail can take you to Kayak Beach (.27 miles) in one direction or Eagle River Landing (.5 miles) in the other. The trail also connects to the Horse Tram Trail and the Boy Scout Beach Trail. Access to these beaches are a great way to get outside and enjoy the majestic view of Southern Lynn Canal.

The valley was the first staging area for mining operations in Eagle River. Mining for gold brought trams and a smelting operation through the valley. The horse tramway was used to transport ore from the mining town of Amalga, located near Eagle Glacier, to Eagle Harbor Landing.

In the early 1900’s the Ackerman family homesteaded the valley, they moved away at the onset of World War II due to the possibility of Alaska’s involvement in the war. Remains of the farm can still be seen in the valley.

Joe Smith purchased the property and built a large house for his family in the mid 1950’s. His family ran a dairy farm.

CBJ acquired Mr. Smith’s property in 1997.

Southeast Alaska Guidance Association (SAGA), leased the land from the city for over two decades and offered the community youth advocacy, development and education programs. During this lease, SAGA built a low and high ropes challenge course that is still located at the Eagle Valley Center. SAGA’s lease ended in 2015. In 2016, CBJ Parks & Recreation ventured into the management of the Eagle Valley Center to offer local residents, non-profits, businesses, and visitors the use of this facility and Natural Park area for outdoor education and enjoyment.
