Update from Docks & Harbors on downtown waterfront deckover project

August 20, 2019 – News

City and Borough of Juneau contractor Trucano Construction and subcontractor, ENCO Alaska, are making progress on the Downtown Waterfront Improvements Project, located between the Marine Parking Garage and Pier 49. The contractors have been focused on demolition and dirt work. Trucano removed the center approach dock and ENCO is salvaging and placing rip-rap below the new wall location. Pile driving is taking place this week.

ENCO will continue using excavators to build a pad for the new retaining wall while Trucano follows behind and drives 24-inch diameter steel piles. These piles form the deep foundation for this important wall. Following pile driving, rebar and wall forms will be installed to facilitate pouring concrete to complete the wall.

While this work takes place, local businesses and residents can expect the following:

  • Some noise and vibrations may occur in the vicinity of the pile driving operations
  • Early morning or night work may take place for tide-dependent dirt work by ENCO Alaska
  • Day and weekend shifts are anticipated for the duration of the project
  • Material deliveries will take place at off-peak times to supply the pile driving and rip-rap installation process

If you have any questions, concerns or experience disruptions from the construction activities, contact the project manager, Deputy Port Engineer Erich Schaal at 586-0397 or [email protected].
