Survey shows employees are proud to work at CBJ

June 25, 2018 – News

As an organization, the City and Borough of Juneau cares about employee morale, engagement and work environment. That’s why CBJ introduced an Organizational Culture Survey in 2002 and has been doing one every year since 2007. This year, close to 80 percent of employees across city departments – or about 400 people – took the survey in May (CBJ’s culture survey does not include Bartlett Regional Hospital or the Juneau School District). Of that total, 383 CBJ employees indicated they’re focused on serving the public with integrity to a great or very great extent, while 319 employees are proud to work at CBJ to a great or very great extent. See survey results here.

The overall culture score is 3.76 out of a high score of 5, which is a slight improvement over last year’s 3.70 score. This score takes into account things like morale, employee involvement, information flow, customer service and working with others. In general, survey scores in these areas all trended up this year, indicating improvements over time.

The score for overall employee engagement is 4.10 out of a high score of 5. The survey asked employees to rank statements like, “I feel a sense of accomplishment in my job,” “I am focused on serving the public with integrity,” “I feel like I can make a difference by working here,” and “I feel valued here.”

Employees were asked to answer survey questions about CBJ as a whole organization and answer questions specifically about their department. Department directors will be going over survey results with staff in the coming weeks, as well as facilitating ongoing discussions throughout the year about how to make the work environment even stronger, healthier and more positive.
