Recycling center building closes, but recycling continues in same location

February 22, 2018 – News

In light of safety considerations, Waste Management has closed the Lemon Creek building that houses the City and Borough of Juneau’s drop off recycling program. Waste Management and CBJ are actively working together to find a new location for the recycling center. Until then, Waste Management has set up a temporary solution and people can still bring recycling to the same location during the same hours.

The recycling center, located at 5600 Tonsgard Court, is open Thursday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center continues to accept the same materials – cardboard, #1 and #2 plastics, mixed paper, glass, tin cans and aluminum. People dropping off recycling can park in the same location and containers will be visible, easy to access and clearly labeled. Waste Management will have staff members on hand to answer any questions.

CBJ runs the drop off recycling program and contracts with Waste Management. Waste Management decided to close the building due to safety considerations for customers and employees.

“We’re always monitoring the structural integrity of our buildings. We’ve assessed the structural integrity of this building and determined that it is no longer safe for operations due to age, deterioration and the tough winter conditions,” Waste Management’s Eric Vance said.

CBJ’s recycling drop boxes are unaffected by the building closure. Drop Box locations are: the back parking lot of Thunder Mountain High School, the back parking lot of Juneau-Douglas High School, and by the Statter Harbor office. To learn more, go to juneaurecycling.com.
