Project Playground public meetings Dec. 10 & 11

December 4, 2017 – News

Learn about design changes to Project Playground at a community meeting hosted by the Project Playground Steering Committee and the City and Borough of Juneau. There are two opportunities to attend the family-friendly meeting – Sunday, Dec. 10, 3:30 p.m. at the University of Alaska Southeast Glacier View Room and Monday, Dec. 11, 6 p.m. at Centennial Hall Ballroom 1.

“We have solicited comments and ideas from the community, including the schools, and we’ve incorporated a lot of feedback into the redesign, including better elements that welcome kids of all ages and abilities. We’ll be presenting the results and general concepts that came out of that, where we are now and how we move forward,” CBJ project manager Alexandra Pierce said.

The public will have an opportunity to talk to the project team, including representatives from the Design team (Juneau-based Corvus Design and playground specialist Leathers & Associates), Project Playground Steering Committee members and CBJ staff. There will be discussion on the funding elements and how the community can be involved in rebuilding and painting the playground.

“We thank the community for contributing ideas to the new design. We are working hard to rebuild quickly with enhanced safety so the playground will be back next summer,” steering committee member Melanie Coleman said.

The original Project Playground at Twin Lakes burned down April 24. CBJ has received $1.3 million from an initial property insurance reimbursement to design and construct the new playground similar to what it was before. Any improvements to the original design will be paid for with fundraising dollars. The Juneau Community Foundation, which is managing donations, has received about $170,000.

The steering committee is continuing to fundraise through fence pickets. Individuals and families can purchase a fence picket for $60; businesses for $120. Each picket will allow up to 17 letters (spaces included). To buy a picket, fill out an order form or email [email protected] with any questions.
