Planning Commission meets May 12. Here’s how to weigh in.

The Planning Commission Meeting will occur May 12 at 7 p.m. This meeting will be telephonic only, and will be to review a permit to continue explosive storage in association with an approved quarry at Hidden Valley in upper Lemon Creek, a permit to construct a marine float and allow up to 160 visitors a day at Sentinel Island Lighthouse, and a permit for a Sealaska Heritage Institute arts instructional building and plaza. These items are up for public hearing.

Members of the public wishing to testify or listen in can call 907-713-2140 up to 10 minutes prior to the start of the Planning Commission Meeting. When prompted, enter the Participant ID – 813893 – and state your name. Callers will be asked which agenda item they wish to testify on and will be notified when it is their turn to speak. At the start of testimony, the caller will be asked to state their name, place of residence, and will be asked to stay on the phone after their testimony to answer any questions from the Commission. A Conditional Use Permit to continue explosive storage in Hidden Valley, upper Lemon Creek, in association with an approved quarry (USE2020 0006)

The applicant requests a Conditional Use Permit to continue explosives storage at an existing rock quarry in Hidden Valley, Upper Lemon Creek. The quarry has been operating since the 1980s, and a Conditional Use Permit was recently approved to continue operations for another ten years.

A Conditional Use Permit to construct a marine float and allow up to 160 visitors per day at Sentinel Island Lighthouse (USE2020 0004)

The applicant requests a Conditional Use permit to construct a marine float and to allow up to 160 visitors per day at Sentinel Island Lighthouse. The proposed float would be constructed on pilings and include a platform and gangway landing. This would allow moorage through the full tidal range, and allow larger vessels to dock. The applicant states that the goal of the project is first to preserve the historic resources of Sentinel Island, and second to share those resources with the public. The purpose of the project is to provide safe and convenient access for users.

Sealaska Heritage Institute Arts Instructional Building and Plaza (USE2020 0007)

The applicant requests a Conditional Use permit for the development of a mixed-use arts campus and plaza. The project includes the construction of a subsurface parking garage, pedestrian plaza, and a two-story building with a basement for Native Arts instruction. Additionally, the applicant proposes to construct a canopy which extends from the proposed SHI arts campus building to the existing Sealaska office building. The covered canopy is wide enough to accommodate a walking path, and small vendor areas for outdoor retail booths.
