Planned resignation means likely opening of 1-Year Areawide Assembly seat

August 2, 2018 – News

Assemblymember Norton Gregory has publicly announced that he intends to resign from his seat on the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly after August 9, which would create a vacancy for an Areawide seat in the October 2 Regular Municipal Election. While unusual to announce the anticipated resignation of an Assembly member, the goal is to advise the public in a manner that allows ample time for citizens to consider running for local elected office.

Currently, these vacancies will be on the October ballot: Mayor; two District 2 seats (one 3-year term, and one 1-year term); one District 1 seat; and three School Board seats.

Residents of Downtown Juneau, Douglas, North Douglas, Lemon Creek and the Airport area are eligible to run for District 1; residents of Mendenhall Valley and out the road are eligible to run for District 2. The Mayor is an Areawide seat. All residents are eligible for Areawide seats.

The candidate filing period for the October 2 Regular Municipal Election opens Friday, August 3 at 8 a.m. and will close on Monday, August 13 at 4:30 p.m. People interested in running for municipal office must complete a Declaration of Candidacy, a Nominating Petition, and an Alaska Public Offices Commission Public Official Financial Disclosure. There forms are available online and must be filed with the CBJ Municipal Clerk Office during the filing period.

Upon creation of a vacancy for the Areawide seat, the Clerk will begin accepting filing materials for the 1-year-term office, which would represent the remainder of Gregory’s term.
