New House Build program to build seven affordable Lemon Creek homes

September 25, 2018 – News

Celebrate the launch of the new House Build program during a dedication ceremony Wednesday, September 26, 3-4:30 p.m. on Jackie Street at the Renninger Subdivision in Lemon Creek (next to Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School). House Build is a collaboration of Juneau-Douglas High School, University of Alaska Southeast, and Juneau Housing Trust to build affordable homes for Juneau and provide a hands-on, educational experience. House Build now has land and long-range plans to build the Jackie Street Cottages, seven houses over the next several years.

Meet and talk with the current House Build students, see the project plans for Jackie Street Cottages, and learn about the construction project’s progress. Site preparation and foundations for the first two of seven houses are in place and construction has already begun.

The City and Borough of Juneau has worked with the partnership for the past 10 years to make land available for purchase by the Juneau Housing Trust, and to support and engage the school district and university students in hands-on learning experiences building affordable houses for the community.

The Juneau Housing Trust manages the land ownership through a community land trust, and works to help low- and moderate-income homebuyers purchase these homes and become homeowners. Through the community land trust model, these homes will become part of a portfolio of permanently affordable homes for families in the Juneau community. The students and teachers in both the construction technology courses at JDHS and UAS work on building the houses under the guidance of a UAS construction instructor.
