Juneau’s Fourth of July fireworks show will require social distancing and masks

June 24, 2020 – News

The annual Gastineau Channel Fourth of July fireworks show will take place this year. The event, which receives funding from the City and Borough of Juneau, will require spectators to wear a face covering and maintain at least 6 feet from non-household members. More details on safety protocols for the event are forthcoming.

The Juneau Assembly made the decision to allow the fireworks show during its Committee of the Whole meeting Monday night. An emergency ordinance mandating the use of a face covering during the fireworks show is on the June 29 Regular Assembly Meeting agenda.

Large events and mass gatherings can contribute to the spread of COVID-19 by people who are infected and attend these events. Stay home if you have any symptoms of COVID-19, including fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea, decreased appetite, or diminished sense of taste or smell (see a more thorough list here). If you develop any symptoms of COVID-19 while at the event, please go home immediately. People in higher-risk groups should consult with their healthcare provider about attending large events. If you’re on the fence at all about attending, please err on the side of caution and stay home.

Again, spectators watching the fireworks will be required to maintain at least 6 feet from non-household members and wear a face covering. Large events where people are in close proximity to each other pose a greater risk of spreading COVID-19. The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads mainly from person-to-person through talking, singing, coughing, sneezing, etc.

The Fourth of July fireworks show is run by the volunteer group Juneau Festival Association and is scheduled to take place the night of July 3 at 11:59 p.m.
