Juneau has one new case of COVID-19

June 18, 2020 – News

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reports one new resident case of COVID-19 in Juneau. How the individual contracted the virus is under investigation. Cumulatively, 39 people from Juneau have tested positive for COVID-19 since March. Of those, four cases are active and 35 individuals have recovered.

The state Division of Public Health initiated a contact investigation and will reach out to any person who may have come into contact with this individual. Public Health will notify and quarantine additional persons as appropriate.

A case reported on June 8, which has since been under investigation, is now being categorized as secondary. Cases attributed to secondary transmission were a contact to a confirmed case. The case reported yesterday is still under investigation.

Juneau’s case today is part of 12 new ones reported statewide. The State of Alaska has had 708 cumulative cases; 247 are active. The state has also had a total of 89 nonresidents test positive for COVID-19, including three individuals in Juneau, two of which have active cases.

As a reminder, the most effective strategy to slow the spread of COVID-19 is prevention. Please stay six feet or more away from non-family members, cover your mouth and nose with a face cover when around others, wash your hands frequently, and stay home when you’re sick and get tested for COVID-19 if you have even mild symptoms. Call Juneau’s COVID-19 Screening Hotline at 586-6000, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
