Independence Day Holiday: Road closures, city facility openings/closures & special events

City Hall and most CBJ Offices are closed Thursday, July 4. Regular office hours will resume on Friday, July 5.

Douglas Soapbox Derby Challenge: The Soapbox Challenge will take place July 3 & 4 on St. Ann’s Ave from Summers Street to 3rd Street. Beginning at 5 p.m. on July 3 until 6 p.m. on July 4, that section of road will be closed to vehicular traffic. Barricades will be in place along with tires lining the edges of St. Ann’s as bumpers. Vehicles parked in this area during the closure will be cited and impounded at the owner’s expense.

Glenn Frick Memorial Run:  The Juneau-Douglas High School cross-country team will hold its annual 1-mile “Glenn Frick Memorial Run” prior to the start of, and following the same route as, the Juneau 4th of July parade. The race, led by 3 cyclists, will begin at 10:25 a.m., last approximately 20 minutes with the parade route clear of racers by 10:50 a.m.

Juneau Parade: The Juneau 4th of July parade begins at 11 a.m. at the Dept. of Labor building on West 8th Street. The parade route is as follows:

Parade begins at Egan Drive and West 8th Street. Traveling inbound on Egan Drive via the outbound lanes to Main Street. It will turn left and travel up Main St. The parade will then turn right onto Front Street and continue on Front Street then turn right onto Franklin Street and travel to the traffic circle. The parade will then head outbound on Egan Dr. via the inbound lanes to West 8th Street. Traffic will be closed on all streets along with parking lots on the parade route beginning at 10:20 a.m. and will reopen at approximately 1:30 p.m. All streets will be posted “No Parking” in effect from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Any vehicles parked on the parade routes or in areas marked as “No Parking” will be impounded at the owner’s expense, and vehicles will NOT be available for pick up until Friday, July 5.

Douglas Parade: The Douglas parade begins at 2 p.m. The parade runs from 3rd & “I” Street to Savikko Park Road. 3rd Street will be posted “No Parking” from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. During this period of time, traffic will be routed into Douglas on 4th Street and out of Douglas on 2nd Street. 2nd Street will be posted as One Way Northbound and 4th Street will be posted as One Way Southbound. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Streets will be posted as “No Parking.” The Douglas Boat Harbor parking lot will be available for parking.

Capital Transit & Care-A-Van: A reminder to Capital Transit and Care-A-Van passengers.  Buses and vans will not be operating on Thursday, July 4.  Full service will resume on Friday, July 5.  The contact number for Capital Transit is 789-6901 and Care-A-Van is 463-6194.

CBJ Docks & Harbors:

July 3rd: The Cruise Ship Terminal (CT) and Alaska Steamship (AS) floating docks will be open for public viewing of the fireworks from 10:30 p.m. until 30 minutes after the completion of the fireworks.

July 4th:
Statter Harbor (Auke Bay) Office is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Aurora Harbor Office closed July 4.

The Port Field Office is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (closed 12-1 p.m. for lunch).

  • After hours, contact dock field staff at 321-4926/VHF Radio.

The Douglas Harbor launch ramp may be restricted and congested due to the celebration and parade.

Juneau International Airport: Open as usual for the traveling public. The Management and Badging offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4 and reopen on Friday, July 5.

Juneau Police Department: Police Officers and Public Safety Dispatchers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. JPD’s administrative offices closed from 4:30 p.m. Wednesday evening (July 3) until Friday (July 5) at 8 a.m.

Juneau-Douglas City Museum: Open on July 3 (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) and Closed on July 4 and will be open regular hours on July 5.

Municipal Libraries: The Juneau, Valley, and Douglas Public Libraries close at 5 pm on Wednesday, July 3 through Thursday, July 4. Libraries will be open regular hours on Friday, July 5.  Book drops locked from 5 p.m. July 3 until 8 a.m. July 5.

Parks & Recreation Facilities:

  • Zach Gordon Youth Center Open July 3 from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Closed on July 4
  • Augustus Brown Pool and Dimond Park Aquatic Center Open July 3 regular hours. Closed July 4.  Facilities will be open for regular hours on July 5.
