Group proposes mural on Marine Parking Garage wall

November 1, 2017 – News, Notices for Public Comment

You know those old timey postcards that say “Greetings from…” and feature the name of a city in large letters with different landmarks of that place inside each of the letters? Imagine one for Juneau. A group of Juneau residents is proposing a mural depicting that be painted on the south facing wall of the Marine Parking Garage. The Juneau Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee will discuss the proposal at its Nov. 7 meeting, 6 p.m. in City Hall Chambers.

The Greetings Tour Committee – the group making the proposal – is made up of Travel Juneau board members, Downtown Business Association representatives, a Juneau Public Libraries employee and various downtown business owners and community members. The committee is named after the Greetings Tour, an effort by two artists, Victor Ving and Lisa Beggs, to create murals in all 50 states. “The ‘Greetings Tour’ seeks to create public art that will capture the pride of local residents for their hometowns and spark the interest of visitors and tourists,” the Greetings Tour website says.

The mural will be approximately 40 by 15 feet, according to the project proposal. The proposal also states there is an opportunity for a local muralist to collaborate with the Greetings Tour artists on design and painting. The Greetings Tour Committee plans to fundraise for the $12,000 cost of the mural. For more information about the committee, contact Dana Herndon at 523-2324 or [email protected].

The public has an opportunity to comment on the proposal during the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee Nov. 7 meeting. If recommended favorably by the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee, the proposal then goes to the Assembly for final approval.
