Future of Hurlock Ave property to be discussed at March 19 Assembly work session

The future use of the city-owned property at 9290 Hurlock Avenue is scheduled for discussion during the Assembly Committee of the Whole’s March 19 work session at 6 p.m. in City Hall Chambers.

Last December, Juneau Youth Services vacated the Mendenhall Valley property after close to 50 years of using it as its Cornerstone Campus, transitional housing for adolescents and young adults. The City and Borough of Juneau put out a call for proposals for an entity with experience and capacity to take over use of the property and develop it to meet a community need, with the possibility of making the property available through negotiated sale or lease.

Several entities applied. Of the final five applicants, the Assembly Lands Committee determined its top three choices during its February 26 meeting – childcare center Gehring Nursery School, assisted living facility Alaska Legacy Partners and mental illness support and recovery center Polaris House. Aunt Margaret’s House, transitional housing for people coming out of prison, and Prama Home, a child- and senior-care facility, were the other two applicants.
