Downtown wayfinding signage will feature local voices and stories

As part of developing a new downtown wayfinding signage system, the City and Borough of Juneau has contracted with community arts organization Ping Chong + Company to create several audio installations. The audio will feature the voices and stories of local residents that illuminate life in the Capital City. Ping Chong + Company and CBJ are hosting two information sessions on the audio installations on Thursday, August 22, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Juneau, Arts & Culture Center and Tuesday, August 27, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Downtown Library.

“If you have little-known histories and memories to share, including stories that offer a window into the unique lived experiences of Juneau’s Alaska Native, Filipino, immigrant, and LGBTQ communities, as well as people who engage in conservation, mining, fisheries, government, and religious communities, please contact us and/or come to one of the information sessions. All are welcome. The audio installations will become a permanent public art experience—a unique and powerful way to encounter diverse perspectives of Juneau,” Juneau artists Ryan Conarro & Lillian Petershoare of Ping Chong + Company wrote.

Following the information sessions, Conarro and Petershoare will host a series of story circles and interview sessions, September 10-20, where community members can share personal stories, memories, and histories. The artists will then collaborate with local musicians this winter to create the audio installations. In Spring/Summer 2020, CBJ plans to release the audio installations, which will link to the new downtown wayfinding signage system.
