Docks & Harbors wants public feedback on waterfront development plan

November 16, 2017 – News, Notices for Public Comment

By 2019, Juneau’s waterfront may include more stores, an expanded USS Juneau Memorial and a staging area for passenger vans.

City and Borough of Juneau Docks & Harbors has been in the process of determining how to develop the waterfront from Marine Park to the Taku Smokeries Dock since August. Members of the public weighed in during meetings and an open studio in September. Now, the Marine Park to Taku Dock Urban Design Plan is up for approval at the Docks & Harbors Board’s regular meeting on Nov. 30, 5 p.m. in City Hall Chambers. Docks & Harbors seeks comments ahead of this meeting for the board to appropriately address concerns and recommendations.

A large portion of the Marine Park to Taku Dock Urban Design Plan includes developing a 1.3-acre piece of land known as the Archipelago Lot, which is mostly owned by Morris Communications. Docks & Harbors, which owns a small portion of the lot, plans to work collaboratively with the private owner to develop the area.

“The Marine Park to Taku Dock Urban Design Plan reflects the desires of the private land holder and it also reflects the public need for increased open space and an additional bus staging area. So we’re looking at a partnership with the private owner to bring that vision to fruition,” Port Director Carl Uchytil said.

The plan includes space for food carts, a deck-over expansion for the USS Juneau Memorial, additional restrooms, and space for a new small vessel dock and a future covered gathering shelter.
