Do you care about the pools? If so, come to a public meeting on Feb. 20 or 28.

Juneau’s two municipally-owned pools are currently managed by a semi-empowered City and Borough of Juneau Aquatics Board. That could end this spring. To discuss its future, the Aquatics Board is holding two public meetings – one on Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall Chambers and another on Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in the Dimond Park Aquatic Center.

The Juneau Assembly created the Aquatics Board by ordinance in 2015 after voters approved the concept through a ballot initiative. The effective date of the board is scheduled to sunset on May 28 unless the Assembly decides otherwise. In anticipation, the Aquatics Board has been working to evaluate whether the board should continue and, if so, how?

The board has identified four options and is seeking public input. The options include: No Action, Extend Term of Existing Board, More Fully Empowered Board (Eaglecrest Model), or Contract with a Nonprofit. At the Feb. 20 and 28 public meetings, the board will present on the pros and cons of each option and next steps. The board plans to make a recommendation to the Assembly at the Assembly Finance Committee joint meetings with Eaglecrest Board and Aquatics Board on March 14 at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall Chambers.
