COVID-19 update in Juneau

July 20, 2020 – News

Alaska Health and Social Services reports five new resident cases for Juneau – one case reported today and four cases reported Sunday. The state is also reporting 22 new nonresident cases for Juneau – 21 cases reported today and one case reported Sunday. Juneau has one new hospitalization, which means there are currently two individuals with COVID-19 at Bartlett Regional Hospital.

One of the new resident cases is employed by the City and Borough of Juneau. The CBJ employee is not in a public-facing position and there is no known work-related exposure. The person is currently in isolation and the State Division of Public Health is conducting contact tracing. The employee’s case was a result of secondary transmission, or being in close contact with somebody else who has tested positive for COVID-19.

The state’s 21 new nonresident cases for Juneau are from the seafood industry and are part of the 26 employees at Alaska Glacier Seafoods who tested positive for COVID-19 that CBJ reported yesterday. Of those 26 employees, one is a resident and 25 are nonresidents. Contact tracing for this group of cases is ongoing. About 10-15 tests from the July 15 testing effort are still pending results.

On July 17, CBJ reported nine cases associated with the seafood processor – five residents and four nonresidents. The source case was a result of community spread, which led to eight more secondary cases. In fact, that grouping involved 10 cases – five residents and five nonresidents.

At the moment, CBJ knows of 64 residents who’ve tested positive for COVID-19 since March. Of that number, eight cases are active and 54 are recovered. Cumulatively, Juneau has had 37 nonresidents with COVID-19 – 30 cases are active and seven have recovered and/or are no longer in Juneau. These resident and nonresident COVID-19 case numbers differ from the State of Alaska’s numbers for Juneau due to CBJ reporting the AGS numbers ahead of the state.

Cumulatively, Alaska has had 1,949 resident cases statewide – 75 of those reported new today – and a total of 465 nonresident cases.
