Community rallies to offset Personal Protective Equipment supply shortage

March 27, 2020 – FYI

Activated by worldwide shortages of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients, Juneau residents are dusting off sewing machines and creating patterns to make gowns, face shields, hoods, and covers for N-95 respirator masks for first responders and Bartlett Regional Hospital staff.

Individuals and groups are also making protective cloth masks. Such masks are not considered PPE. Bartlett Regional Hospital Infection Preventionist Charlee Gribbon sees a need for washable gowns and secure, lightweight face shields. Gribbon requests that PPE and mask makers seek guidance from hospital approved sources.

If you would like to volunteer to make masks or PPE, please fill out the Volunteer Application form here. Those without internet access can sign up to volunteer by calling 500-0771.

Hal Daughtery has opened up his marine upholstery company, Capital Canvas, as headquarters for one local group of creative volunteers. This week it set up for mass production of PPE for Southeast Alaskan healthcare providers, workers, and emergency responders. The pop-up operation received material donations, labor, and shop space from local businesses. The group is all run by volunteers.

Volunteers must complete a medical questionnaire and go through a decontamination area before entering the Capital Canvas operation. If volunteers are sewing masks they can drop them off at their dropoff station.
