Election Day and post-Election Day happenings

October 1, 2018 – News

The City and Borough of Juneau’s Regular Municipal Election is tomorrow, October 2. Juneau voters will elect a mayor, four Assembly and three School Board seats. Early voting is still taking place Monday, October 1 at City Hall Conference Room 224 Foyer until 4:30 p.m. and at the Mendenhall Mall Annex 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On Election Day, polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you’re unsure where your polling place is, check here, or call the State of Alaska Polling Place Locator number 1-888-383-8683, enter your Social Security Number or your voter number when prompted, and you will be told where your polling place is located.

Election Central, which is open to the public, will be held at 7:30 p.m. October 2 at City Hall Chambers. Preliminary unofficial results will become available as they’re called in from polling places.

If you or anyone you know is unable to go to the polls due to age, illness, or disability, a friend or family member can assist the voter using the Personal Representative ballot method. The Personal Representative comes to either of the early voting locations or the precinct polling place on Election Day, checks out a ballot on the voter’s behalf, delivers the materials to the voter who votes the ballot, and then returns the voted ballot to one of the early voting stations or polling places on Election Day. As long as the completed ballot is returned by close of polls 8 p.m. Election Day, the ballot can be reviewed for approval.

The Absentee/Question review board will meet on Wednesday, October 3 beginning at 10 a.m. to review all early and questioned ballots. The board’s work will continue through the week, and ballots will run through the machine on Friday, October 5 in City Hall Chambers; time will be determined that day and the public will be notified.

The Canvass Review Board will meet all day on Tuesday, October 9 in City Hall Conference Room 224 to review/audit election results and certify the election. For newly elected School Board members, the School Board meets in a work session at 4:30 p.m. on October 9 at Thunder Mountain High School library followed by a Regular School Board meeting at 6 p.m., which is scheduled to have the official swearing in. The first regular meeting of the new Assembly is scheduled for October 15 at 7 p.m. in City Hall Chambers. The official swearing-in is planned, as well as recognition of the outgoing Mayor/Assembly members.
