Beth Weldon resigns from Assembly, opening up 1-year District 2 seat in Oct. election

Beth Weldon resigned from the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly yesterday, July 31. Her departure leaves a new vacancy for a District 2 seat in the October 2 Regular Municipal Election. This is another opportunity for the public to serve the community. Juneau voters will also elect a mayor, another District 2 Assembly seat, a District 1 Assembly seat and three School Board seats.

In a July 31 letter to Mayor Ken Koelsch, Weldon wrote: “Effective immediately, I hereby resign my position as Assembly member representing District 2. Serving with you and the other members of the Assembly has been an honor. I have appreciated everyone’s hard work and dedication to move Juneau forward.”

Of the three District 2 seats on the Assembly, two of them will now be on the ballot in the Regular Municipal Election – one 3-year term, and one 1-year term. According to CBJ code, the two seats will be filled by ranking order. The candidate who receives the most votes will fill the 3-year term and the candidate who receives the second most votes will fill the 1-year term, which is the remainder of Weldon’s term.

Juneau voters will also elect a mayor, a District 1 seat and three School Board seats in October. Residents of Downtown Juneau, Douglas, North Douglas, Lemon Creek and the Airport area are eligible to run for District 1; residents of Mendenhall Valley and out the road are eligible to run for District 2. The Mayor is an Areawide seat.

The candidate filing period for the October 2 Regular Municipal Election opens Friday, August 3 at 8 a.m. and will close on Monday, August 13 at 4:30 p.m. People interested in running for municipal office must complete a Declaration of Candidacy, a Nominating Petition, and an Alaska Public Offices Commission Public Official Financial Disclosure. There forms are available online and must be filed with the CBJ Municipal Clerk Office during the filing period.

To vote in the October 2 Regular Municipal Election, you must be registered by September 2. Voters, regardless of which District they live in, will get to vote for all open seats.
