Public can comment on draft mining ordinance revision

February 13, 2018 – News, Notices for Public Comment

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly Mining Subcommittee is accepting written public comment through February 22, 2018 on a draft revision of CBJ’s mining ordinance, or Title 49.65 Article I. Oral public comment will be taken at the committee’s next meeting on March 1 at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall Chambers.

At its Jan. 25 meeting, the committee directed City Attorney Amy Mead to revise the current mining ordinance for clarity but without removing any substantive requirements. The committee adopted the draft as a working document at its Feb. 8 meeting. Read the draft ordinance revision here. Read an annotated version of the draft ordinance revision here. Written public comment on the draft revised ordinance can be sent to the City Clerk’s Office at [email protected] or 155 S. Seward Street, Juneau AK 99801.

The seven-member Assembly Mining Subcommittee is comprised of Assembly members Maria Gladziszewski, Norton Gregory (Chair), and Beth Weldon; Planning Commissioners Ben Haight and Paul Voelckers; and public members John Kato and Roman Motyka. Community Development Director Rob Steedle is staff liaison to the committee. Mayor Ken Koelsch established the mining subcommittee last June in response to a proposal to revise the city’s existing mining ordinance.
