School district wants input from families as it plans for next school year

May 19, 2020 – FYI

As the Juneau School District nears the end of the 2019-2020 school year, it wants to get input from families on planning the next school year. Because the district doesn’t know for sure what will happen by the first day of school on August 17, it’s preparing for possibilities ranging from regular in-school classes to total distance learning, similar to what schools are currently doing. It is possible the next school year will start in a blended model with some in-person and some distance learning.

JSD plans to be ready with a flexible model so the district can be responsive to the changing health needs in the community. Once more details are available, the district will share them. For now, families are asked to help JSD by providing some feedback through this quick survey. Please respond by 4 p.m. this Friday, May 22.

Last month, through a different survey, the district asked families how at-home student learning was functioning. JSD thanks the 735 parents and guardians who responded. Here are some of the results:

  • 96% of them had been contacted by their child’s teacher or school
  • 94% of their students had attended live online classes
  • 96% had devices for school work and 98% had reliable internet service
  • 39% of students felt overwhelmed with the amount of work
  • 35% felt there was too much communication to track

The district used the feedback to adjust school work expectations and parent communication where needed.
