Full Description

Fridays in March

Can you name five women artists from Juneau? The Juneau-Douglas City Museum will highlight five local women artists by participating in the 3rd annual National Museum of Women in the Arts’ #5WomenArtists campaign during the month of March. Because March is Women’s History Month, the City Museum will feature one local artist on our Facebook page each Friday.  Be sure to visit facebook.com/JuneauMuseumFriends to learn more.

The #5WomensArtists campaign began in March 2016, in honor of Women’s History Month, when the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) asked the question, “Can you name five women artists?” This question was not easy for many to answer and it sparked conversation about gender parity in the arts and how do women create art? In response, organizations worldwide participated by posting about women artists on social media sites using the hashtag, #5WomenArtists. Last March, the NMWA continued the challenge with astounding participation from 520 arts and cultural organizations from seven continents and 30 countries and this year more than 275 institutions from 49 states, 18 countries, and 5 continents have signed on as contributors.

This March the emphasis is on sharing the stories of women artists of color.  The Juneau-Douglas City Museum will focus on 5 local Tlingit women artists.
