In tandem with the Juneau Public Libraries summer reading program, ?Every Hero Has a Story?, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum is hosting a series of free child-friendly historic downtown walking tours. The first of these happens Saturday, June 6th, from 10 to 11:30 am. Subsequent tours take place at the same time on June 27, July 18 and August 22.

Beginning at the City Museum, children and their adult partners will hear stories of people who have made an impact on the Juneau community as the group walks around the downtown neighborhoods. Participants will meet people like Lee Hing, better known as ?China Joe?, who generously gave to people in need and is credited with saving many miners from sure starvation, and will hear about Mary Joyce, truly a woman ahead of her time, who claims the descriptors nurse, dog musher, lodge owner, radio operator and bush pilot, to name a few. There will be stories of Shell Simmons? daring rescues in his float plane, Elizabeth Peratrovich?s heroic testimony before the Alaska Senate during the 1945 debate over the Anti-Discrimination bill, and more.

Each tour is limited to 10 participants and adults must be accompanied by a child. Children over the age of 12 may participate without an adult partner. The program is free, but pre-registration is required to confirm a spot. Call 586-3572 or stop by the Museum to register for one of the tours.
