Instructions for Writing a Poem

Try your hand at writing a poem this month!

Write a Haiku Poem:

A haiku is an unrhymed three-line poem. Though there are different ways to write haiku, the traditional pattern in English is to write the first and last lines with five syllables each, and the middle line with seven syllables. In other words, the pattern of syllables looks like this:

  • Line 1: 5 syllables
  • Line 2: 7 syllables
  • Line 3: 5 syllables

Haiku Example:

  • Tired cat sleeps all night.
  • He needs lots of rest for a
  • Long day of napping.

Write a Cinquain:

There are many ways to write a cinquain. A traditional cinquain follows these rules:

  • They are 5 lines long.
  • They have 2 syllables in the first line, 4 in the second, 6 in the third, 8 in the fourth line, and 2 in the last line.
  • They do not need to rhyme, but you can include rhymes if you want to.

Cinquain Example:

  • Strolling
  • North Douglas Road
  • Eyelids half closed by sun
  • Sea lion spyhops then follows
  • April
