Coffee and Collections with Richard Simpson

Saturday, April 7th

10:30 AM - 12:00 noon

Simpson’s Coffee & Collections presentation will offer a “tour” of the Globalizing Southeast Alaska website. This open website aims to collect visual artifacts regarding the social, environmental, and historical impact of the multinational cruise ship industry on the landscape of southeast Alaska.  This project, part of a larger initiative developed by Geography and Environmental Studies students at UAS, aims to construct a spatial history of cruise ship tourism in Southeast Alaska from 1977-2017 and was funded in part by a Juneau History Grant from the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, City and Borough of Juneau, 2017.

The website “tour” includes how to navigate and access the history, geographic, economic, cultural, and environmental qualities of cruise ship activity as well as demonstrate ways to contribute new events and information through establishing “pins” on the website for public discussion.  Simpson will also share some of the interesting discoveries that students have made in the process of developing the website and offer possibilities for future research.

Coffee & Collections is a free event, and coffee will be provided thanks to a generous donation by Heritage Coffee Company.
