Coffee & Collections: George Danner III on the Construction of Glacier Highway November 17th

Saturday, November 17th
10:30 - Noon
Free

On his website titled, A Historical Pictorial of the Construction of Glacier Highway, George Danner III has organized 260 photographs taken between 1911 and 1943 that document the construction of Glacier Highway from present day Harborview Elementary school to Sherwood Lane. Danner's Coffee and Collections presentation will feature around 50 of these images and he will talk about how construction techniques have changed over time. Danner will draw from his memories, as well as his father's, in order to provide a reference between the historic images and Glacier Highway today.

Both Danner and his father, George Danner Jr., were born and raised in Juneau. George's grandfather came to Juneau in 1914 and was a pioneer dairy farmer, building Mendenhall Dairy in 1933. George spent his career on boats and ships, ranging from gillnetters to oceanographic research vessels and finally to his 32 years with the Alaska Marine Highway. He retired as chief engineer in 2007. Danner's family came to own these photos in the late 1950’s when they were given to his father.

George Danner III will present on the construction of Glacier Highway as part of the City Museum’s on-going Coffee & Collections series on November 17th, 2018 from 10:30-Noon. Coffee & Collections is a free event, and coffee will be provided thanks to a generous donation by Heritage Coffee Company.
