Evergreen Cemetery Walking Tour with Marie Darlin

Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1891 in what was then a location outside of the residential and commercial areas of downtown Juneau. In 1892, volunteers constructed ?Cemetery Road,? currently known as Calhoun Avenue, to connect downtown Juneau to the cemetery. Now surrounded by neighborhoods, Evergreen Cemetery is the final resting place for over 8,000 Juneau residents, including many people who played an influential role in Juneau?s history.

Join Marie Darlin, life-long local resident and advocate for local and state history, for a walking tour of Evergreen Cemetery, sponsored by the Juneau-Douglas City Museum and Juneau Parks & Recreation Department. Walk from the City Museum down the old ?Cemetery Road? to Evergreen Cemetery, learn about the cemetery?s history, and hear the stories of some of the notable people buried there, including Marie Drake, Andrew P. Kasheveroff, John Olds, Mary Joyce, and others.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for children ages 12 and under and may be purchased at the City Museum or by calling 907-586-3572. The tour includes a free copy of the Evergreen Cemetery Historical Walk Guide, a pass for free admission to the City Museum, and a coupon for the Museum?s gift shop. The tour will begin at the City Museum, located on the corner of 4th and Main Streets, and end at the Cemetery. Space is limited, and advanced reservations with payment are recommended.
