John Price Elected Unofficial Delegate to Congress

OCTOBER 7, 1899-The Rev. Father Rene, superintendent of Catholic mission in Alaska, has returned to his Juneau headquarters after visiting the Yukon River and Cape Nome.

The space formerly occupied by the Magnolia Saloon has been taken over by Bachelor and Bernard for their merchandise business.

The only clothes cleaning establishment in Juneau, M. Stahl, proprietor, has moved to 217 Second Street.

OCTOBER 11, 1899-The Alaska District Convention was called to order at the Opera House on Monday morning and A. P. Swineford of Ketchikan was elected President of the Convention, beating out John G. Price of Skagway. J. J. Clark was elected Secretary. The main purpose of the convention is to elect a man to represent Alaska in Washington, D. C., especially before Congressional committees. Although the call for the convention was sent territory wide, all of the delegates are from Southeastern Alaska.

OCTOBER 18, 1899-The Territorial Convention, which has been meeting here for the past 10 days, elected John Garland Price of Skagway as unofficial Delegate to Congress from Alaska and he will leave soon for Washington, Price is 29, a graduate of Iowa State University with a law degree, and came north in 1897 after hearing of the Klondike discovery.

OCTOBER 28, 1899-The new store of Charles Goldstein presents a very attractive appearance will soon be open for business.

The ladies of the Trinity Church Guild will give an oyster supper beginning at 8 p.m. on the evening of October 31.

Another building to be under construction by next May will be the Winn Bros. grand Opera House which will stand on the site of the present Opera House at Second and Seward. The old building was badly damaged by fire some time ago.

NOVEMBER 4, 1899-Henry Shattuck, Juneau agent for the Alaska Steamship Company, has returned from a trip to Skagway.

Thomas S. Lyons, townsite trustee, this morning sold 34 lots at public auction. The lots brought from $1 to $110 each. Lot 8 Block 33 sold for $1 to Max Straight. Malcolm Campbell paid $110 for Lot 1 Block L, and Daly & Blum paid the same price for Lot 7 in Block 110.
