Sales Tax Compliance Accountant I/II

Full Time 37.5 hours per week $57,447.00 - $69,888.00

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Sales Tax team is looking for an enthusiastic auditor with a strong attention to detail and focus on excellent customer service in a regulatory environment. A successful applicant can demonstrate effective communication across a variety of platforms, including in-person interactions, email, and formal written documentation with a diverse audience. Due to the nature of the work, professionalism and integrity are critical; the documents we examine are confidential and an auditor has direct access to the inner-workings of local merchants. Last, but not least, we are looking for an adaptable mindset that is open to technology and modernization of our business process.

This position can be filled at the Compliance Accountant I or the Compliance Accountant II level, depending on experience. Our office and procedures are designed to build up our staff in the world of self-reported taxes and we can provide both on-the-job and formalized educational opportunities to a candidate that demonstrates the skills we are looking for.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK ON OUR TEAM
The 5-member Sales Tax Office within the 17-member Treasury Division is a tight-knit team that works together to ensure timely and accurate collection of Sales Taxes within the borough. You will find the work complex and diverse with frequent interruptions and public interactions all while providing excellent customer service. You will be constantly assessing and prioritizing your tasks and workload with in the Sales Tax Office to ensure that revenues are accurately and expediently posted. The Treasury Division is a dynamic and evolving environment that will require your innovative thinking, willingness to adapt quickly, and a flexible mindset. WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position works (Monday through Friday) 8am – 4:30pm. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau in on the first floor of City Hall. There is some fieldwork, including travel to local businesses, expected on a periodic basis.

Job Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
As the Compliance Accountant, a key position in the Sales Tax office, you will be working with the Revenue Officer and other Sales Tax Office staff to help our local merchants be in compliance with our local Sales Tax regulations. You will be verifying confidential documents to ensure compliance with business registrations, and the reporting and remitting of general sales, hotel/motel, tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana self-reported taxes. You will also be working with the Business Personal Property Appraiser in verifying reporting compliance of business personal property declarations and with Treasury staff to verify merchant payments.

You will be interacting regularly with merchants and the public in a variety of formats, formal and informal. You will support local merchants by responding to general tax inquiries and providing guidance on specific tax situations. You will be using your detailed technical and analytical skills to perform detailed analysis of tax returns, provide merchant education, and complete formalized audits.

Minimum Qualifications

DO I HAVE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS JOB – OUR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

SALES TAX COMPLIANCE ACCOUNTANT I 

Education:         Associates degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related area of study.

Substitution:    Any combination of experience and/or education (ie. post-secondary related courses, occupational endorsement/certificate) that provides the applicant the knowledge, skills, and abilities typically gained in an Associates Degree in Finance, Accounting, or related area.

*Applicants must provide documentation with their application to support how they meet the substitution criteria.

Note:                     Strong customer service skills and experience auditing or analyzing financial data is preferred.

SALES TAX COMPLIANCE ACCOUNTANT II

Education:           Associate’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related area of study.

Substitution:       Any combination of experience and/or education (ie. post-secondary related courses, occupational endorsement/certificate) that provides the applicant the knowledge, skills, and abilities typically gained in an Associate’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or related area.

*Applicants must provide documentation with their application to support how they meet the substitution criteria.

            AND

Experience:       One (1) year of professional level experience as a Sales Tax Compliance Accountant I or an Accountant I with the City & Borough of Juneau or equivalent elsewhere.

OR

OR                  Two (2) years of expert technical work as an Accounting Technician III with the City & Borough of Juneau or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution: A Certified Public Accountant may substitute for the required experience.
