JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Firefighter - EMT I-II-III (Flex Position)

Full Time 56 hours per week $18.30 - $22.55 Hourly (DOQ)

Firefighter EMT I - $53,289.60- $59,696.00 Annually (DOQ)

Firefighter EMT II - $55,968.64- $62,666.24 Annually (DOQ)

Firefighter EMT III - $58,618.56- $65,665.60 Annually (DOQ)

Additional pay incentives based on union contract for professional pay may be earned.

NOTE: This position may be classified at any level from the entry/trainee to the journey level. The level at which the selected applicant is appointed will be based on the applicant’s qualifications. Candidates may also be considered for permanent seasonal positions.

Job Responsibilities

Under general direction, responds to varied emergency situations, and performs rescue activities. Maintains and operates a wide variety of firefighting and rescue equipment. The firefighter is required to commit and effectively operate firefighting and rescue equipment, extinguish fires, render emergency medical care, write and submit written reports, and be the on-scene commander at emergencies until relieved.

Firefighter-EMT I responsibilities include the following:

  • Searches area and rescues people from fires and other emergencies; carries children, injured, infirm or frightened people from burning buildings; locates and digs out people trapped in tunnels, pipes, excavations; rescues people trapped on cliffs, ledges, etc.; performs water or ice rescues; evacuates people from hazardous spills/areas of contamination by chemicals, gas, etc.
  • Responds quickly to alarms/pagers; puts on protective clothing rapidly and loads necessary equipment/ apparatus; selects best route to fire or emergency scene.
  • Operates, maintains and utilizes a wide variety of firefighting apparatus and equipment to effectively suppress fires.
  • Assesses properties of fire, such as smell and color of smoke, to determine what is burning and what equipment and extinguishing agents to use and what protective gear to wear; assesses effects of weather, wind, humidity and other conditions on the fire; assesses best route for evacuation and access to the fire scene; relays information to responding firefighters.
  • Listens, relays and follows the verbal orders of Fire Chief/Incident Commander at the scene.
  • Evaluates whether entry of burning structure is feasible; forces open doors, windows or gates; breaks or cuts into walls, roofs or fences to gain access to fire or to search area.
  • Checks, operates and maintains generators, air compressors, breathing apparatus, light plants, rescue equipment and other specialized firefighting/rescue equipment and tools; maintains records and prepares reports on equipment test, usage and fire and ambulance incidents.
  • Operates ambulance and other related emergency equipment; assesses general condition of injured individual by noting vital signs, pupil dilation, respiration, skin temperature, alertness, mental orientation.
  • Administers necessary basic first aid and emergency care to stabilize the patient for transport; administers CPR; administers intravenous fluids and medications to patient on instruction from medical personnel; checks victims at scene for medic alert symbols or emblems; transports patient to ambulance or emergency vehicle with special care to avoid further injury.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Firefighter-EMT II responsibilities include the following (in addition to FF-EMT I duties):

  • Start and maintain IV’s
  • Administer basic pre-hospital medications under the direction of standing orders.
  • Place advanced airway devices for effective airway management
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Firefighter-EMT III responsibilities include the following (in addition to FF-EMT II duties):

  •  Administer advanced level cardiac medications.
  • Administer electric defibrillation to patients.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

All Levels:

Education: High School graduation or possession of a GED certificate. An Associate or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is highly desirable but not required.

Other: Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment. A valid Alaska Driver's License at time of appointment and for continued employment. Certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter or an equivalent certification as determined by the Fire Chief at time of appointment.

Firefighter-EMT I:

At time of appointment either:

  1. Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician I; OR
  2. Certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) (as appropriate to the position), however, applicants must obtain State of Alaska EMT certification prior to appointment.

Firefighter-EMT II:

At time of appointment either:

  1. Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician II; OR
  2. Certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), additional training and education may be necessary to qualify as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician-III (as appropriate to the position), however, applicants must obtain State of Alaska EMT certification prior to appointment.

Firefighter-EMT III:

At time of appointment either:

  1. Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician III; OR
  2. Certification with the National Registry of Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), additional training and education may qualify (as appropriate to the position), however, applicants must obtain State of Alaska EMT certification prior to appointment.

NOTE: Appointment to a Firefighter – EMT I-III position will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of the psychological assessment and the medical evaluation.

Continued employment and advancement opportunities: Continued employment requires completion of the on-the-job training program, meeting or exceeding performance standards, and the following conditions:

  • Employees who are hired with or achieve any EMT certification must continue to maintain that EMS certification as a condition of continued employment.

TESTING SCHEDULE: Testing dates and an exam schedule have been established. Testing locations and a testing schedule will be posted on the Human Resources' web page at a later date.

EXAMINATION: All applicants, including Juneau residents, must go through the registration and pass the written examination with Public Safety Testing in addition to applying with the CBJ Human Resources & Risk Management Department. CLOSING DATE: Applicants must complete the written examination with www.publicsafetytesting.com and submit a completed CBJ application (form Number P001), resume, criminal background check AND a driving record issued by the Department of Public Safety in the applicant’s state of residence* to the Human Resources & Risk Management Department prior to the next testing dates established. * The criminal background checks and driving records submitted must account for the five years preceding the date of application.
