The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is the major population and economic center in southeastern Alaska and the capital of the state. The City is located in an extremely beautiful setting on Alaska’s Inside Passage, surrounded by tree-covered mountains in the middle of the largest temperate rain forest in North America. The CBJ encompasses an area of 3600 square miles, has a population of approximately 32,500, and receives in excess of 1,000,000 cruise ship passengers a year. Juneau is not on a highway system and is only accessible by air and by the Alaska Marine Highway system.

Job Responsibilities

The Engineering and Public Works Department offers a wide variety of services including: the planning, design, and construction of the municipal capital improvement program for streets, water and wastewater utilities, schools, recreation facilities & a wide variety of public facilities; maintenance of municipal streets; water and waste water utilities; operation of a transit system; operation of municipal recycling, hazardous waste and junk vehicle programs, and; operation of a fleet maintenance program. The Department has 140 employees and the Director is responsible for a $42 million operating budget and a $38 million capital improvement budget.

The successful candidate will have expert level knowledge in management theories, principles and techniques, and the organization and administration of public works agencies. In addition, the successful candidate will possess strong oral and written communication skills, be skilled in building and maintaining effective working relationships with government officials and special interest groups, be able to resolve conflict and build consensus where there are differing opinions and interests, have a strong history of developing and implementing new programs or services to increase operational efficiencies, and the ability to lead a team of professional staff in delivering excellent services to the community we serve.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. In addition, candidates should have a minimum of five years of experience in the planning, construction, maintenance, or operations of public facilities, utilities, or transportations systems. At least three years of this experience must have been at a managerial level and must have included responsibility for supervising professional level staff.

Special Note: The successful candidate must be able to travel to various locations within the City and Borough of Juneau to meet program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid Alaska driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required.

Special Notes

Starting salary is $116,584.00 - $137,238.40, DOQ. In addition, the CBJ has a generous benefits package that includes: 12 paid holidays, 21 days of personal leave the first year, exceptional health and wellness benefits, and participation in the State of Alaska Public Employee Retirement System. Both salary and leave accrual are subject to regular increases based on service with the organization.
